Effects of serotonin and fluoxetine on blood glucose regulation in two decapod species BJMBR
Santos,E.A.; Keller,R.; Rodriguez,E.; Lopez,L..
One of the best known crustacean hormones is the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH). However, the mechanisms involved in hormone release in these animals are poorly understood, and thus constitute the central objective of the present study. Different groups of crustaceans belonging to diverse taxa (Chasmagnathus granulata, a grapsid crab and Orconectes limosus, an astacid) were injected with serotonin, fluoxetine, or a mixture of both, and glycemic values (C. granulata and O. limosus) and CHH levels (O. limosus) were determined after 2 h in either submerged animals or animals exposed to atmospheric air. Both serotonin and fluoxetine caused significant hyperglycemia (P<0.05) after injection into the blood sinus of the two species, an effect enhanced...

Feline primary hyperaldosteronism: an emerging endocrine disease Ciência Rural
Bento,Daniel Diola; Zahn,Fabíola Soares; Duarte,Laura Carolina; Machado,Luiz Henrique de Araújo.
ABSTRACT: The primary hyperaldosteronism, an endocrine disease increasingly identified in cats, is characterized by adrenal gland dysfunction that interferes with the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, triggering the hypersecretion of aldosterone. Pathophysiological consequences of excessive aldosterone secretion are related to increased sodium and water retention, and increased excretion of potassium, which induce hypertension and severe hypokalemia, respectively. The most common clinical findings in cats include: polydipsia, nocturia, polyuria, generalized weakness, neck ventroflexion, syncope, anorexia, weight loss, pendulous abdomen and blindness. Diagnosis is based on the evidence of hormonal hypersecretion with suppression of renin release,...

La neuroendocrinologie des crustaces: Evaluation des progres obtenus ces dernieres annees ArchiMer
Vanherp, F.
Particular attention is given to the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH), to the gonad inhibiting (GIH) and stimulating hormone (GSH), to the moult inhibiting hormone (MIH) and to the peptidergic factors related to some hormones from vertebrates and insects. The interactions of these factors as well as the coordination with biogenic amines and steroids in the control of the metabolism, reproduction and moulting are postulated.

Morphogenese sexuelle et regulation hormonale de l'activite genitale chez la crevette Penaeus japonicus en elevage ArchiMer
Laubier, A; Chim, Liet; Payen, G.
A study of the sexual physiology of penaeid prawns essentially based upon Penaeus japonicus is performed in both descriptive and experimental ways, using the controlled rearings conducted at the Centre Oceanologique de Bretagne (CNEXO-COB), Brest. Sexual morphogenesis is described. This preliminary study enables definition of simple criteria for determination of the stage of genital development of the prawns during their growth. The neuroendocrine control of the genital system development is studied, using eyestalks ablations and male eyestalks extracts injection in prawns belonging to the same sex. A biochemical criterion as a test of the effect of eyestalks extract injections on the genital system development is discussed. The evolution of the specific...

Morphometric Study of Muscle Fibers in Rats Submitted to Strength Training and Growth Hormone International Journal of Morphology
Castoldi,Robson Chacon; Ozaki,Guilherme Akio Tamura; Giometti,Ines Cristina; Camargo,Regina Celi Trindade; EmyKoike,Tatiana; Garcia,Thiago Alves; Filho,José Carlos Silva Camargo; Belangero,William Dias.
The aim of the present study was to observe the changes in the muscle tissue of rats after application of growth hormone (GH) and performing a strength training protocol (ST). In total, 40 male Wistar rats, 60 days old, were used, divided into four groups: control (C), control and application of GH (GHC), strength training (T), and strength training with the application of GH (GHT). The physical training protocol (PT) was composed of four series of 10 jumps in water, 3x/week, with an overload of 50 % of body weight for four weeks. GH was administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 0.2 IU/Kg to the GHC and GHT groups and saline (0.9 % sodium chloride) to the C and T groups. After four weeks of PT, the animals were euthanized and samples taken from the...

Quantification of fecal estradiol and progesterone metabolites in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) BJMBR
Chelini,M.O.M.; Souza,N.L.; Rocha,A.M.; Felippe,E.C.G.; Oliveira,C.A..
Alternative methods to the utilization of laboratory animal blood and its by-products are particularly attractive, especially regarding hamsters due to their small size and difficulties in obtaining serial blood samples. Steroid hormone metabolite quantification in feces, widely used in studies of free-ranging or intractable animals, is a non-invasive, non-stressor, economical, and animal saving technique which allows longitudinal studies by permitting frequent sampling of the same individual. The present study was undertaken to determine the suitability of this method for laboratory animals. Estradiol and progesterone metabolites were quantified by radioimmunoassay in feces of intact, sexually mature female Syrian hamsters during the estrous cycle...

Serial clinical, colpo-cytological and endocrinological evaluations of Cerdocyon thous bitches from the Rio de Janeiro zoo Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Monteiro,Rafael Veríssimo; Santos,Márcio Ricardo Costa dos; Vianna,Eduardo Borges; Araújo,Tatiana Cardoso Soares de; Verona,Carlos Eduardo; Fedullo,Luís Paulo Luzes.
Serial clinical, colpo-cytological and endocrinological examinations of two five-year-old females of the crab-eating dog (Cerdocyon thous), from the RIOZOO Foundation in the State of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil, were carried out over a 10-month period. Clinically healthy animals were kept in sand substratum enclosures, located 500m apart from each other. They were each housed with two males. The colpo-cytological technique employed for Cerdocyon thous used methods similar to those developed for domestic bitches. Unlike domestic dogs, blood cells were absent in all phases of the estrus cycle, including the pro-estrus phase. Differentiation of each type of vaginal cells during the estrus cycle phases in this species follows the same patterns shown by domestic...

Variations des activites digestives en fonction des facteurs du milieu chez les crustaces ArchiMer
Galgani, Francois; Benyamin, Y; Vanworhmoudt, A; Cecaldi, J.
Proteolytic enzymes of hepatopancreas of six species of peneids (Penaeus kerathurus, P. japonicus, P. monodon, P. stylirostris, P. merguiensis and P. vannamei ) have been studied. Some of their physiological variations have been characterised. Increase in acclimation temperature of crustaceans enhances increase of specific activities of proteases. Variations of salinity does not modify specific activities, nor quantities of trypsin, nor electrophoretic patterns of these different proteases.
